Stephen Dempsey is the Executive Director of the Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia which is the preeminent energy research organization in Canada focused on leading edge research to enable the responsible development of Nova Scotia’s offshore energy resources.

In this role, Stephen is helping to identify and respond to the key research questions impacting the development of the world’s largest tidal energy resource located in Nova Scotia, as well as developing research and investment strategies to attract exploration commitments for the Nova Scotia offshore petroleum sector, which has received the largest ever financial commitments as a result of the OERA’s research efforts.

In his prior role as CEO of the largest economic development partnership in the region, Stephen has led various major transformative projects in the areas of energy and medical research, both in Atlantic Canada and globally.

He is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences on the subject of energy research and economic growth.  Stephen has served on many boards including the Halifax International Airport Authority and the Partners in Care Association of Capital Health.  He received his Bachelor of Commerce from Saint Mary’s University and his MBA from the University of Ottawa.  Stephen, an avid sailor, sea kayaker and biker, lives in beautiful Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia.

Carey Ryan is a professional engineer with a Masters in Business Administration whose career has spanned more than 40 years in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. He has served in a number of senior positions in the government of Nova Scotia including Assistant Deputy Minister of Energy and Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Petroleum Directorate, and prior to that was Director of Energy Management with responsibility for the Province’s activities related to renewable energy technologies and energy conservation. Following his retirement from the provincial government he was Vice President, Treasurer and Acting President of Petroleum Research Atlantic Canada (PRAC). He has been a member of the Canada Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board; the Board of Nova Scotia Resources Limited; was a member of and chaired the Nova Scotia Energy and Mineral Resources Conservation Board; was a member of the Board of the Nova Scotia Tidal Power Corporation; and acted as Canadian co-chair of the Northeast International Committee on Energy. He is currently provides energy related consulting services through his company Thackeray Consulting, is a partner in Novus Consulting and  is the Director, Research & Business Development with the Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia.

Jennifer Pinks is the Research Manager at the Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia.  Jennifer oversees the project management and administration on the portfolio of current geosciences, tidal and marine sound research projects.  As part of her responsibilities, she manages the research Call for Proposals and associated RFP process, which is OERA’s primary mechanism to mobilize its various research projects.  “One of the best parts of my job is working with the diverse, passionate and talented group of researchers from across town, cross country and internationally –  that collectively, are making important contributions to advancing the offshore energy sector here in Nova Scotia”.

Prior to joining OERA, Jennifer worked in R&D administration at Petroleum Research Atlantic Canada (PRAC) as well as at Saint Mary’s University, both located in Halifax.  She received a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from University of Waterloo and a Masters in Environmental Management from the University of London, UK.  Career highlights feature seven years in the energy industry in Calgary and ten years living overseas in Malaysia, Thailand, and Venezuela where she enjoyed working and volunteering in a range of disciplines including environment, population studies, women’s issues, community relations and education.

Nalani Perry is the Operations Manager at Offshore Energy Research Association.  As an integral part of the Association’s team, Nalani works closely with the Board of Directors and with the research team to coordinate research projects to ensure flow and exchange of information, streamlining interactions and collaborations on initiatives on behalf of the Association.  In addition to her oversight of the coordination of our research programs, Nalani focuses on developing and implementing processes and systems for all the day-to-day operations, and is the lead on the OERA website and event planning to ensure the successful completion of OERA events, including the Nova Scotia Energy R&D Conference.

Nalani holds a BA (Honours) in English Literature from Saint Mary’s University, a Paralegal Diploma from the Maritime Business College and a B.Comm in Human Resources with a specialization in Organizational Behaviour.

Russell Dmytriw is a Senior Project Manager with over 25 years of experience in the fields of environmental impact assessment, green energy development, surface water resource assessment, and application of environmental regulation to industrial development. His consulting career has included environmental and geological projects in Québec, Ontario and eastern Canada. This experience embraces all facets of project execution including planning and work program development, implementation and management of multidisciplinary field investigations, data analysis and interpretation, liaison with clients and government agencies, and participation in public meetings and hearings. Mr. Dmytriw obtained a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Manitoba (1984) and an M.Sc. in low temperature geochemistry from McGill University (1994).

Our Administrative Assistant, Ashley Moriarty comes to OERA with 10+ years of Office and Administrative Experience. With a Certificate in Financial Management from Saint Mary’s University, and a diploma from NSCC in Graphic Design, Ashley’s career highlights consist of working for AECOM in their Oil & Gas division in Northern Alberta in numerous Administrative and Project roles. Now settled back in Nova Scotia with her family, Ashley is happy to be working downtown in the heart of Halifax with OERA. Ashley is excited to be working with an organization that is helping to find renewal energy resources to make the world cleaner for her daughter’s generation and generations to come. We are happy to have Ashley and her expertise join our team.
