Community Meetings – Bay of Fundy SEA Update

Strategic Environmental Assessment 2013 Open House Presentations

The Offshore Environmental Research Association (OERA) and their consultants AECOM + the Acadia Tidal Energy Institute are hosting three community presentations to inform and engage residents living around the Bay of Fundy.  OERA is updating the 2008 Strategic Environmental Assessment for tidal energy development in the Bay of Fundy and invites interested residents, students, First Nation members, community and environmental groups to attend the presentations.   We will be in Windsor on Monday September 9th, Parrsboro on Wednesday, September 11th  and Digby on Tuesday September 17th.  Please see below for more details – come, listen, discuss, present a poster – all are welcome!

Objective of SEA

The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process guides decision making in advance of the Environmental Assessment process which occurs before specific development projects are allowed to commence.

This SEA process encompasses the social, economic, and environmental effects and factors associated with the potential development of marine renewable energy resources in the Bay of Fundy region.

Objective of Community Presentations

Community presentations allow interested residents, environmentalists, business owners, academics, and other stakeholders to participate for the purpose of gaining information relating to marine energy, and also to share their knowledge, opportunities and perhaps concerns about the intended project.

The Open Houses are information exchange forums where the project team will facilitate discussions and engage the attendees to express their opinions, questions, and concerns regarding present and future tidal energy projects, the SEA process, the environment, Nova Scotia’s Marine Renewable Energy Strategy, and other related subjects.

The Open House starts with a poster presentation from 6 to 7 pm, giving attendees time to circulate and engage in informal discussions.  Following the poster presentation the project team will give brief presentations from 7 to 8 pm, outlining the SEA process, tidal energy technologies and existing biophysical environment of the Bay of Fundy.  An overview of the latest research results regarding tidal energy in the Bay will also be presented.  A question and answer / discussion session will follow the presentations, from 8 to 9 pm.

Invitation for Community Posters

For the Open House Session, community and environmental groups are invited to set up tables, present their own posters, and provide literature on associated topics relevant to the presentations.
