Nova Scotia has committed to generate 25 per cent of the province’s electricity through renewable energy by 2015, which could include in-stream tidal, run of river hydro, wind and biomass. The new Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act also sets targets for greenhouse gas emissions. Can the new ocean renewable technologies help us meet these targets without adversely affecting the environment and other resource uses in and around the Bay of Fundy? How could the new technologies best contribute to community and regional economic development?

OERA, through funding from the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, carried out a Phase I Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process for the Bay of Fundy and is currently in the process of beginning a Phase II Update to the Bay of Fundy SEA as well as a SEA for the Cape Breton Coastal Region to help answer these questions.
