Canada-UK Funding Competition: Advancing Environmental Monitoring, Sensing and Instrumentation Technologies for In-Stream Tidal Energy Applications

Competition Outline

The Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia (OERA) and Innovate UK are jointly investing approximately $1.4m CAD (£755k) in collaborative R&D projects to develop enhanced sensing technologies for tidal stream energy applications.

The aim of this competition is to develop technologies that lead to the acquisition of better data, improved data analysis and collection methods, helping to reduce risk, uncertainty and cost to the tidal stream energy industry.

Proposals must be collaborative and business-led, including at least one business from Canada and one from the UK. We expect to fund industrial research projects, in which a SME business partner will generally attract up to 60%, and large enterprises 50%, of the total project costs through funding from OERA and Innovate UK.

This is a two-stage competition that opens for applicants on 6 October 2014. The deadline for expressions of interest is at 12:00 Atlantic Standard Time (AST) or 16:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on 28 November 2014. Full details of the call are available on the Innovate UK competition page (for UK registrants) and on the OERA competition page (for Canadian registrants).

Partnership Brokering Webinar

The UK’s Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) held an online interactive webinar to support partnership building between prospective applicants from Canada and the UK on Thursday 9 October 2014.

In addition to the opportunity to learn more about the funding call, attendees had the opportunity to present briefly their project idea or technical R&D capability.

A dedicated online group for this call has been created, where you can continue your partner search and consortia building activities. The group is hosted on the _Connect platform, which is provided by Innovate UK, and is free to join.  Please click here to join the group.
