Performance validation of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in a controlled environment

In the past few years, the Nova Scotia tidal community has augmented its marine operational capacity, but some unknowns and risks still exist, and the cost associated with such operations are high. Improving the performance of key installation tools, such as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) therefore appears important in reducing tidal energy levelized costs. In this context, the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) is currently leading a collaborative research initiative developing computer simulation of ROV thrusters’ performance and the results show that validation in a controlled environment is required to help move the initiative forward. This project proposes testing thruster performance in the Aquatron Laboratory to validate simulation results. The project outcomes will help enhance marine operations capacity and efficiencies in high flow tidal environments in the Bay of Fundy.
